The Digital Generation
Nigeria has one of the highest social media engagement rates globally. According to Datareportal, Nigeria ranks among the top five nations in daily social media usage. Our survey shows that the primary reason young Nigerians use social media is for information and news, reflecting a clear shift from traditional media to digital platforms. A 2024 Reuters Institute report highlights that 91% of English-speaking Nigerians access news through digital media. However, this growing dependence on social media as a primary news source leaves Nigerians increasingly vulnerable to misinformation and online scams.

The drivers of disinformation campaigns often target pivotal moments – such as elections and protests – to manipulate public narratives. More than 60% of the young people we surveyed claim that misinformation has discouraged them from political participation. Fortunately, some Nigerians are already taking steps to combat misinformation through reporting fake or misleading information on social media and verifying news before sharing.

Recommendations
While the government and CSOs are already taking steps to combat misinformation through digital literacy and fact checking initiatives, most youths surveyed believe these efforts are not sufficient. More can be done. The government must enact policies against misinformation and misuse of AI-generated information and these policies must not trample on free speech and expression.
